Joy is chosen at times

Deep joy does not depend solely on everything going well. It is also educated through acts of the will supported by real reasons: God loves you, you can begin again, and there are goods that endure. This does not mean denying pain or forcing a fake smile. It means not surrendering your entire soul to the first passing cloud of the day. Here too God enters in a very concrete manner. He does not look only at what you do on the outside; he also wants to order the heart, heal what is wounded, and teach you to respond better, not merely react.
