It's easy to see injustice in others

Mark as read

What seems intolerable in others usually has an explanation when it's you.

You're outraged by the coworker who slacks off, the politician who lies, the relative who's always late. And rightly so. But if you stop for a moment, maybe you find something similar in yourself: an excuse for not doing your part, a half-truth, a lateness you always justify. No one is a good judge in their own case. It's easier to see the speck in someone else's eye than the log in your own. What bothers us a lot in others can be a mirror of what we don't want to see in ourselves. It's not about no longer calling wrong what is wrong. It's about starting at home. When something outrages you, a good question is: do I do something similar?

Key idea

What outrages you in others can be a mirror of what you don't see in yourself.

Your challenge for this idea

The next time something someone else does outrages you today, ask yourself honestly whether you do something similar.
