Questions

Is the Pope never wrong?

Mark as read

Infallibility doesn't mean he gets everything right: not in football, not in politics, not in his personal life.

Many people think Catholics believe the Pope is never wrong. That isn't so. The Pope can be wrong in his opinions, in governing decisions or in personal matters, like anyone else. Infallibility is something much more specific: God looks after his Church and helps the Pope not to err when he defines a doctrine of faith or morals. It doesn't happen every time he speaks. It serves to protect what Christ taught, so that it reaches each generation intact. Understanding this helps you love the Pope without idealizing him and listen to him with trust, without thinking that every sentence of his is a dogma.

Key idea

Infallibility protects the faith; it doesn't turn the Pope into someone who gets everything right.
