Is being good boring?

Mark as read

Deep down you suspect that behaving well means giving up having fun. That is not so.

There is a deeply rooted idea: that good people are dull, that being holy means living in half-light, without color, giving up everything fun. As if evil were exciting and the good were mere boredom with rules. The reality is the opposite. Look at the truly good people you know: they are neither gray nor bitter, they usually have a deep joy and a freedom that others lack. Whoever does evil ends up a slave to their whims; whoever lives the good is master of themselves and enjoys life more, not less. Being good is not fading out, it is catching fire. It does not take away adventure: it wagers it on something worth the effort. Boredom is not found in virtue; it lies in constantly circling around yourself.

Key idea

Goodness does not extinguish life: it fills it; whoever does evil ends up more enslaved and emptier.

Your challenge for this idea

Think of the best person you know. Are they boring... or do they have something you lack? Imitate them today in one detail.
