Imagining God is not enough
You need to know him as he reveals himself, not only as you imagine him.
If each of us invented God to suit our own measure, we would end up speaking more of our own ideas than of God himself. Faith does not rest on imagination or feeling alone.
Revelation means that God shows himself as he is. Not to crush reason, but to draw us out of false images and lead us into a true relationship with him.
That is why it is worthwhile to know what God has revealed of himself in Christ and in the faith of the Church. Prayer does not invent God: it learns how to relate to him as he truly is.
