An illness can make you distrust care

Mark as read

Sometimes the person trying to help you begins to seem like the obstacle.

During anorexia, the author came to perceive as enemies her family, her friends, the medical team, and even God. The illness had turned care into a threat because it interfered with the goal that dominated her entire life. This can happen with different struggles: the wounded part protects harmful habits and offers reasons to isolate oneself. That help makes you uncomfortable does not prove by itself that it is bad; perhaps it is touching precisely what needs attention. Nor should you obey just anyone. Look at who loves you well, what training they have, and whether they respect your dignity. Checking your perception against several reliable people can open a way out when you no longer see clearly.

Key idea

An illness can distort perception and turn reliable care into an apparent threat.

Your challenge for this idea

Tell a reliable person today what help you are rejecting and listen to their perspective before deciding.
