If you feel you're in the way, say it today

Mark as read

That thought is a symptom, not the truth about your life.

Sometimes, when someone is in a very bad place, thoughts like "everyone would be better off without me," "I don't want to go on" or "I wish I wouldn't wake up" appear. They're frightening and embarrassing, and that's why people keep them to themselves. But keeping them quiet makes them stronger. These thoughts are common in depression and they can be treated. They don't say who you are or what you're worth: they say you're suffering a lot and need help now. Many people who went through this are well today and are glad they talked about it. If it's happening to you, tell someone today: a family member, a friend, your doctor. If you feel you might hurt yourself, call emergency services or a crisis line in your country. Your life matters, to God as well, and you don't have to carry it alone.

Key idea

Thoughts of not wanting to live are a symptom that can be treated, and they need to be shared.

Your challenge for this idea

If this is happening to you, talk to someone today. If you see a friend in a very bad way, ask them directly how they are and whether they've thought about hurting themselves.
