The God who kneels

At the Last Supper something unsettling happened: Jesus, knowing who he was, got up, tied a towel around himself, and began to wash the dirty feet of his disciples. A servant's job. And he did it also with Judas, the one who was going to betray him that very night. With that gesture he said, without words, what God is like and what he wants us to be like: not the one who is served, but the one who serves. For him, commanding is bending down to wash the other's feet, not sitting down to be served. It is an uncomfortable mirror. Whose feet do you find it hard to "wash"? The one you dislike, the one who failed you, the one who is below you? Right there, exactly there, it is measured whether you have understood what Jesus did that night.
