God chose a simple food

Mark as read

To stay with you, Christ chose bread, not a luxury item.

Frossard was struck to discover that God had chosen bread to communicate himself: an everyday food, within reach of the poor and known at any table. The Eucharist does not need luxury to contain immense greatness. That detail says much about God's style. He draws near without overwhelming you, hides in the small, and does not reserve his presence for those with more money, culture, or prestige. Before him, no one arrives with an advantage. It also corrects our way of seeking him. We can expect something spectacular while he offers himself in an ordinary Mass, a simple church, and a piece of consecrated bread.

Key idea

The simplicity of the Eucharist shows that God wants to place himself within everyone's reach.

Your challenge for this idea

Look at a piece of bread today and give thanks that God chose something so common to draw near.
