Go up to the one who just arrived
You were the new one once too.
A coworker starting a new job, someone new in class, a family showing up at the parish for the first time. They're there, a bit on the edge, not knowing where to sit or what the conversation is about. And the rest of us carry on with our own things, not out of ill will, but out of habit.
It helps to remember how you felt the first time. The person who showed you where everything was or invited you for a coffee did nothing extraordinary, but you remember them.
You don't need to become their guide. It's enough to introduce yourself, ask their name and include them in something small. For someone just arriving, that can be the difference between feeling left out and starting to feel they belong.
Key idea
A small gesture toward someone who has just arrived can make them feel they belong.
Your challenge for this idea
If there's someone new near you, introduce yourself today and ask how it's going.
