Giving yourself does not take away freedom

Mark as read

Committing is not losing freedom: it is using it seriously.

Today the idea floats around that tying yourself to something or someone shrinks you, and that freedom means not committing "not to lose options." But look at someone who truly loves: they give themselves, and are no less free for it. Quite the opposite: their freedom shows most there. Giving yourself for love is not giving up on yourself; it is placing your freedom in service of something great. The sacrifice it asks does not diminish freedom: it reveals it. Christ gave his life and no one took it from him; he gave it freely. Living without committing to anything seems freer, but often leaves you empty. Freedom that gives itself to nothing ends up spinning around itself.

Key idea

Freedom and self-giving do not hinder each other: they uphold each other.

Your challenge for this idea

Fulfill a commitment today that costs you a bit. Experience it not as a bond, but as your own freedom in action.
