Giving others responsibility is also helping them

When you fear that someone might fail, you may reduce their role to obeying small instructions. That way you keep control, but you convey that you do not believe in their ability to take responsibility for an outcome. Truly delegating defines the goal, provides resources, and allows choosing part of the way. It includes reviewing, correcting, and accepting that it might not be done exactly in your style. Responsibility without leeway is merely execution. It must also be proportionate: handing over a burden without support does not train; it abandons. The art lies in offering an achievable challenge and supporting without micromanaging. When someone discovers that a part of the common good depends on them, their initiative grows. Helping can consist in stepping back and remaining available, not in disappearing or directing every move.
