Give thanks also for what hurts

Mark as read

Giving thanks only for what is good is easy; that is not where the secret lies.

We give thanks when things work out: an achievement, a joy, something we really wanted. It is natural. But there is a deeper gratitude, one that learns to give thanks also for what is hard: a setback, a wait, even a slight. It is not about pretending pain is good or denying what hurts. It is trusting that, for someone who knows they are loved by God, everything can end up being useful, even if we do not see how right now. That trust changes the weight of things. Start small: giving thanks for the obvious and, little by little, also for the difficult. A grateful heart lives more at peace, because it stops always being on the defensive.

Key idea

Mature gratitude learns to give thanks also for what is difficult, trusting in God.

Your challenge for this idea
