Friendship is willing the good of the other

It is not just getting along.

You can have a good time with someone and not yet be a true friend. Deep friendship appears when you sincerely want the other person's good. That implies rejoicing in their progress, correcting with respect when needed, and helping them grow, even if it doesn't directly benefit you. Willing the good of the other includes rejoicing in their growth, speaking a truth with delicacy, and preventing friendship from reducing to what you receive from it.
