Friendship involves risk

Every deep friendship requires leaving the surface. That involves showing something of yourself, trusting, and accepting that you might not be reciprocated as you expected. Yet without that risk there is no real friendship. Trust grows when you dare to give of yourself with simplicity, without constantly controlling the other person's response. Opening up with prudence always involves a certain vulnerability. Without that step, the relationship can be cordial, but it will hardly ever become a true friendship.
