Relationships

Friendship involves giving and receiving

It is not a one-sided relationship.

There are generous people who know how to give, but find it very hard to receive. They prefer to solve everything alone because asking for help makes them feel weak or indebted. Without realizing it, they leave out the friend who also wanted to care. Friendship needs reciprocity, even if it is not an exact accounting. Sometimes you support, and other times it is your turn to recognize that you cannot handle everything. Receiving advice, company, or practical help allows the other to give of themselves and makes the relationship more genuine. Humility does not consist in despising yourself. It consists in living in reality: you have gifts and also limits. When you let someone step into a concrete need, friendship can leave the surface and become real support for both.
