Fear can comply, but not love

Mark as read

Avoiding punishment can halt an action; it cannot freely give the heart.

The fear of failing, looking bad, or disappointing can produce correct behavior for a period of time. It also turns every single decision tense: the main focus is no longer the good you desire, but the mistake you are trying to escape from. God can make use of an initial fear to steer you away from something harmful, but he does not want a relationship sustained by threat. Love requires freedom: discovering a good, making it your own, and responding because you truly want to, even when it costs. Reviewing your motives does not require waiting until you feel enthusiasm. You can carry out the very same task from a different place: not to purchase approval, but to care for a gift received; not merely to avoid guilt, but to reciprocate. The external gesture might not change, but inside a different relationship begins.

Key idea

Christian maturity moves from acting solely out of fear to choosing the good out of love.
