Fake empathy is noticeable
Using understanding words just to get something remains a form of manipulation.
You can learn to nod, reflect emotions, and formulate the right questions. If on the inside you are only waiting for the other to lower their guard to accept your plan, the technique eventually shows its emptiness.
Authentic empathy accepts the risk of being affected. Perhaps you discover that you had judged quickly, that your solution is useless, or that the person needs something different from what you wanted to offer.
This does not demand feeling the same or surrendering your judgment. It demands sincerity: listening because their reality matters, not just because it improves your influence. The other person senses when they are treated as a person and when as a target. Credible closeness is not staged; it is cultivated by truly caring.
