Explaining to a classmate is also studying

Mark as read

"Instructing the ignorant" is a work of mercy, and at exam time it's very close at hand.

Among the works of mercy is instructing the ignorant. It sounds solemn, but at exam time it takes a very concrete form: explaining to a classmate what you've understood and he can't get his head around. Sometimes you can't be bothered or it seems like a waste of time. And yet whoever explains something understands it better: they have to put it in order, look for simple words, answer questions they hadn't asked themselves. Helping someone else study is pure charity: it doesn't get noticed much, it doesn't earn extra points and it can change someone's year. And it teaches you to study thinking about others too, not just about your grade.

Key idea

Helping someone else understand is charity and, what's more, it makes you understand better.
