Good rules exist because human beings can be wounded.
Ethics isn't a set of refined tastes for getting along without friction. It comes from a reality: some acts build a person up and some acts damage them.
That's why the first principle is still simple and demanding: do good and avoid evil. A society that forgets this can become efficient, but not necessarily human.
