Empathy begins by recognizing dignity

Mark as read

Before understanding what another feels, you need to decide that their inner world deserves attention.

You can learn listening techniques and still treat the other person as a problem, client, or interruption. Authentic empathy begins earlier: it recognizes a human being whose pain, hopes, and freedom matter. That gaze changes your gestures. You stop correcting while checking your phone, you ask before assuming, and you do not use a confidence to win an argument. Attention expresses true consideration. You do not need to feel spontaneous affinity with everyone. Dignity does not depend on liking someone. You can choose careful treatment even with those you find difficult, and from there begin to understand. Christian empathy is not born only from imagining yourself in their place, but from recognizing in them someone loved by God.

Key idea

Empathy rests on recognizing the worth of the other before any affinity, agreement, or usefulness.

Your challenge for this idea

In your next conversation, put away your phone and summarize what the person is experiencing before offering your opinion.
