Easter lasts fifty days
We find it easier to live forty days of Lent than fifty of celebration.
Lent lasts forty days and almost everyone knows what to do in it: some sacrifice, more prayer, a resolution. But Easter goes on for fifty days, until Pentecost, and it often slips by without our noticing. The following Monday we go back to the usual.
The Church extends it precisely because the resurrection is too great for a single Sunday. It's a time of celebration, not of going back to routine as if nothing had happened.
Joy is also looked after with small things: a special meal, giving thanks more often, singing the alleluia with gusto, treating others with more good humor. If Lent prepared you, Easter is for enjoying what God has done.
Key idea
The joy of the resurrection is celebrated for fifty days, not just one Sunday.
Your challenge for this idea
Today, do something small to celebrate that Christ is risen: a special touch at home, a plan with friends or a prayer of thanks.
