Doing things together is not enough to be friends

Mark as read

Shared activity can fill your schedule and still leave your inner world untouched.

You train, work, or go out together every single week. There is good coordination and good moments, but certain questions never appear. The relationship depends entirely on the continuation of the activity. Friendship needs some personal openness: telling what matters, asking about a concern, and allowing moments of silence that are not filled with entertainment. That depth has to grow without interrogations or forced confidences. Activities continue to be valuable; they offer history, spontaneity, and a way of being together. It is only worth checking whether they function as a bridge or as a hiding place. Sometimes it is enough to extend a conversation by ten minutes at the end. The bond becomes freer when it can survive the change of a hobby because it has already found the person behind the plan.

Key idea

Shared activities foster friendship when they open up personal knowledge and do not become a permanent substitute for intimacy.

Your challenge for this idea

At the end of your next routine plan, ask a personal question that you never ask, and also share something true about your week.
