Doing good out of love changes duty

Fulfilling a duty out of fear of reproach can be a first step. But if your entire moral life remains there, every rule weighs like surveillance and you seek relief as soon as no one is looking. Love discovers whom the action serves. You arrive on time because you respect other people's time; you tell the truth because you want a real relationship; you pray because you respond to a friendship. Duty remains, but it acquires a face. You will not always feel that motive with intensity. You can recall it and choose it even if it costs you. Little by little, fulfillment stops being an external negotiation and forms a will more united to the good. You do the same thing, but you are no longer exactly the same while doing it.
