Do not mask pain

Faith does not ask you to call good what hurts.

Sometimes, out of a desire to speak well of God, people use phrases that close wounds too quickly. Suffering is not healed by pretending that it does not matter or does not hurt. Christian faith does not call evil good. God does not abandon you in pain and can draw good even from what is broken, but that does not turn the wound into something trivial. You can seek meaning without denying the truth of what is happening. You can also ask for help, weep, pray, and take a small step toward the light.

Key idea

Pain is lived better when faced with truth and hope, not with easy phrases.

Your challenge for this idea

Accompany someone who is suffering today by avoiding quick phrases; listen first.
