Do not decide for the sick without them

Mark as read

Protecting someone does not mean taking away their voice just when they most need to be accompanied.

Sometimes a family avoids speaking about the Anointing of the Sick because they fear alarming someone who is frail. The intention may be good, but deciding behind their back can also leave them without a consolation they desire and without the opportunity to express how they want to live that moment. The Anointing does not announce that everything is over. It is a sacrament for whoever is going through serious illness or very frail old age: it offers peace, fortitude, and the closeness of Christ. Asking for it in time allows receiving it consciously and participating, instead of turning the sick person into a spectator. Accompanying well requires tact and truth. Listen before assuming, ask what human and spiritual support they desire, and facilitate a visit with a priest if they ask for it. Caring is also respecting the interior freedom of whoever depends on you.

Key idea

Authentic care listens to the spiritual needs of the sick person and respects their capacity to decide.

Your challenge for this idea

If you care for someone who is sick, ask them in a quiet moment what human and spiritual support they wish to receive.
