The cross does not look at you with anger

When contemplating the cross, you might think solely of guilt: "this happened because of what I did." Awareness of the harm is necessary, but in isolation it can produce fear and flight. Christ crucified does not appear as a victim demanding vengeance. He gives his life to seek the sinner and open a way back. His wounds say at the same time that evil matters and that you are still loved. That gaze allows for a contrition distinct from self-contempt. You acknowledge, ask for forgiveness, and repair because the relationship can heal, not because you need to punish yourself until you feel worthy. The cross does not soften sin; it shows a love greater than it. Under that gaze you can stop hiding and begin a concrete conversion.
