The common good includes all of us

Mark as read

There is a good that belongs to no one because it belongs to everyone.

We usually think of the good in personal terms: mine, that of my own people. But another exists that cannot be divided into pieces: the common good. It consists of the conditions that allow each person to develop: peace, justice, trust, care for others. Imagine an orchestra. When each musician gives his best, the ensemble sounds better; and a good ensemble brings out the best in each musician. So it is with the common good: looking after it benefits you, and doing your part well benefits everyone. It is not a matter for politicians alone. It plays out in small details: not cutting in line, doing your share, not littering shared spaces, thinking of whoever comes after you. Small things that sustain what belongs to all.

Key idea

The common good is the set of conditions allowing all of us to grow, and we all sustain it.

Your challenge for this idea

Care today for something that belongs to all and none: shared silence, a common space, or trust in your surroundings.
