The Bible is not all read in the same way
A poem, a parable, and a chronicle speak the truth in different ways.
The Bible is not a single book written all at once, but rather a library containing narratives, laws, poems, prophecies, parables, and letters. Reading every single sentence as though it were a legal transcript can make the text say something that its author never intended to state.
Recognizing the literary genre does not weaken faith, nor does it allow picking whatever you fancy. On the contrary: it requires listening better. A poetic image can convey a profound truth without describing a scientific mechanism, and a parable can teach you who God is without narrating a historical event.
When a passage puzzles you, you do not have to choose between taking it flatly or simply discarding it. Ask what kind of text lies before you, how it fits into the whole of Scripture, and how the Church has read it. Understanding the language is also respecting the Word.
