The Bible isn't a science textbook

Many people dismiss the Bible because they think it's trying to explain how the universe was formed, as a physics book would. That isn't its intention. The truth it teaches is of another order: who you are, where you come from and where you're going. That's why Genesis uses stories, images and symbols, and even tells of creation twice with different details. It isn't carelessness: it isn't measuring, it's teaching something deeper than a piece of data. Understanding this avoids two mistakes: setting it against science as if they were competing, and reading those pages literally as if they were a news report. Each tells the truth in its own way.
