Belonging means letting others count on you
Feeling part of a group includes accepting that your absence and your decisions affect other people.
You can desire community and keep all your options open at the same time. You show up if you feel like it, help when nothing better comes along, and avoid commitments in order to preserve your independence.
Belonging grows when others can anticipate your presence. It does not demand total availability, nor does it eliminate boundaries. It asks you to respond, take your turn, and give honest notice. Your freedom enters into a shared story.
Being needed does not mean becoming indispensable. A healthy community distributes tasks and can continue without you. But it genuinely counts on you, not as an interchangeable spectator. Accepting that responsibility cures the fantasy of belonging only through pleasant emotions. The bond becomes concrete when a part of the common good also depends on your word as well.
