There is a false empathy that, out of fear of causing discomfort, endorses any decision and avoids any call to grow. It looks like welcome, but it can abandon the other person inside whatever is harming them. Authentic understanding recognizes tiredness, fear, and real limits. From there it proposes a possible step, offers support, and respects their pace. It doesn't shout from the finish line or drag anyone along, but neither does it call an unavoidable destiny a difficulty that can be worked on. Accompanying unites patience and hope. It says: "I understand why it's hard for you" and also "I believe you can move forward." That trust is demanding because it looks at the person for what they can become, not just the state they are in today.
